About Alcester Town Hall
Alcester is an old historic building located in Warwickshire.

In 1618, the Lord of the Manor of Alcester, Sir Fulke Greville III, provided £300 for the building of a market hall. Prior to that, traders and customers would have gathered at a well and market cross, which are likely to have occupied the same site.

Simon Whyte was appointed master mason. The limestone for the colonnade columns and cornice came from his quarry at Chipping Campden; the remainder of the stone was Arden Sandstone, probably from Little Alne.

Originally, the whole building was to be constructed in stone, but this was too expensive. The timber-framed upper floor, with its magnificent roof, was constructed at the later date of 1641. The date can still be seen carved into the old roof beams.

The building was also used to jail market traders, who sold goods that were not up to scratch; the offenders were held in the basement prison known as The Hole, which still exists today. Its massive oak door with iron bars is now displayed in the main ground floor room. The cell was still in use as the town lock-up until around 1850, when a new police station opened on Henley Street. The hall was also used as a hospital during the Great War.

There are numerous reports of paranormal activity at Alcester town hall, there have been reports of strange mists appearing, faces have been seen peering from widows of the building, items often go missing but to reappear in places different to where they were left. Strange noises of banging and footsteps are a common occurrence here.
